Last year’s words…

month-off

What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from.

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make beginning.

~ T.S. Eliot, “Little Gidding”

(image and quote found at John Banks Blog)

A new moment – actions taken up to now are in the past. Words spoken are released and cannot be re-spoken.

The future is before us. These past actions and words may need attention. They may have caused division. They may have bonded a new relationship or commitment. How ever these things of the past are treated they will be done so with new language and voice.

An end and a beginning. There is certain tension in Eliot’s poetry. At any transition there is a time to release and a time to look ahead. Feeling that tension we look with hope to the new year’s possibilities. Imagine a new year – a chance to be more conscious of the words we use and more aware of how they are spoken. It is an opportunity to act on lessons learned – to heal what is wounded.

As this new year begins notice the crisp, fresh air – may our words and actions fill that air with kindness, compassion and peace.
